The orchestras at Overland are designed for advanced and intermediate-level musicians playing string instruments and aim to provide students with rigorous instruction in string playing that fosters an environment filled with self-expression, accomplishment, friendship, and, most importantly, fun. Students who have no experience playing a string instrument but still want to learn should contact me directly at the information below so we can devise an individualized plan to make your orchestra experience a positive one.
In String Orchestra, we focus on essential technique and musicianship skills required to play at an advanced level later on. In Concert Orchestra, we focus on advancing string techniques like shifting, vibrato, and advanced rhythm reading. In Symphony Orchestra, we focus on aspects of musicality including critical listening, constructive criticism, making musical decisions, and collaborative efforts.
In addition to this three-tiered model, students also have the opportunity to audition for festivals such as CCSD District Honor Orchestra, Western State Orchestra, and All-State Orchestra. All recordings, assignments, and course materials can be found on the student Schoology site for each respective orchestra. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or ideas for our program at the contact information below.
