Overland High School’s instrumental music program has achieved much success over the last year, due in large part to the contributions of local organizations and community members. Last year, there were about 120 students enrolled in the instrumental music program; now there are more than 200 kids participating in band and orchestra at Overland, and the program continues to grow substantially. The band and orchestra consistently perform challenging music at concerts, participate in regional competitions, and promote a sense of pride and community at Overland High School. The marching band performs at football games and basketball games, and instrumental music students consistently perform at community events, including senior citizen luncheons, assemblies honoring veterans, and in the pit orchestra for Overland’s spring musicals.
We are committed to building the best instrumental music program in the state, and we strive to find a way for every student who is interested in playing an instrument to participate in band or orchestra, regardless of financial need. Here’s a list of some of the instruments and equipment we need in order to continue building the program.
1. Tubas - $56,000 With our program growing each year we will need more tubas for students to perform on.
2. Uniforms - $172,000 The current uniforms are outdated, old, and falling apart. A great band needs to look good.
3. Reeds - $800 Mr. Monarch purchases high-quality reeds for our woodwind players. These reeds are expensive and we subsidize the cost by buying the boxes first and then selling individual reeds to the students for more than half off. The actual price of the reeds ranges from $5-25 per reed depending on the instrument. One of the first steps to having a high quality band is to have high quality instruments, reeds, mouthpieces, etc. for students to use.
4. 5 new trombones with F - attachments - $12,500 Our current trombones do not allow us to play very low notes that much of the music in jazz band for 4th trombone is written for. Also, our current trombones are in bad shape. This trombone purchase would create new musical opportunities for our jazz and concert trombone section. A new trombone with an F attachment costs $2,500.
5. 150 Chairs - $12,150 Because of the instrumental music program growing and through just normal use of the old chairs, we need to start replacing the older chairs.
6. 4 Alto Saxophones - $12,000 Our current altos are old, not functioning properly, and we don't have enough altos for the amount of students that want to play.
7. Travel Donations The band and orchestra need extra money to allow the students to travel and experience high quality musical activities.
8. New Music The band and orchestra are in need of music to add to the library. The cost of a selection averages $65-$80.
9. 150 Music Stands - $7,200
10. 8 Sousaphones - $36,000
11. 4 Tenor Saxophones - $3,400
12. 1 Baritone Saxophone - $9,000
13. 8 Clarinets - $10,400
14. 8 Flutes - $9,600
15. 5 Trumpets - $7,500
16. 2 Bassoons - $18,000
17. 2 Oboes - $14,000
18. Lockers/Instrument Storage - $67,956
